IED opened its first school in Rome in 1973. Today, it welcomes 1500 students in its two hubs in the neighborhoods of San Giovanni and Testaccio. The first one includes a historic palazzo which is home to the Visual Communication courses and has the Felice Claudio Aqueduct running through its garden. The new building houses the Master Department, the library and the School of Design. The IED building in Via Branca, in the lively district of Testaccio, is home to the Fashion and Management Lab courses.

The Roman headquarters benefits from Roman history, architecture, multiculturalism and all of the characteristics that make the Capital a breeding ground for creativity, synergy and social relationships or connections. Rome is the center and point of reference for specific sectors of the creative industry: from visual arts to the artistic and cultural production related to cinema, music, theater and the performing arts, from fashion to craftsmanship and small and medium size businesses.
The city periodically hosts events of national and international importance in which IED is a key active player, including the Film Festival, the RomaEuropa Festival, AltaRoma AltaModa the Photography Festival. The recent opening of new Maxxi and Macro museums has given a new stimulus to the contemporary art industry by attracting the interest of an increasingly large and disparate public.

40 years after the establishment of the first seat in Rome, IED inaugurates in 2013 a new disciplinary area in the capital: Cinema and New Media.
Filmmaking, Storytelling, Production, Screenplay, Soundtrack, Visual Effects, CG Animation, Cartoons, Transmedia, Webseries, App&Games are the keywords of these new courses.
